Art plays an important part in our creative and mental development, both in creating attractive images as well as making sense of the world around us. We continue to have emotions, ideas and experiences throughout life, and we all need the opportunity to translate these into visual forms. Art education is not just about learning technical skills and producing a few highly skilled practitioners – everyone benefits from having a degree of visual literacy. We can all use the skills of perception, judgement and imagination that art education encourages. The process of researching and developing a theme requires an independence of thought and maturity of approach found in few other areas of the curriculum.
Art offers great opportunities to explore different cultures and links with other areas of the curriculum. We aim to promote an awareness of historical and cultural influences within art and a broad knowledge of how art has developed through various historical periods, as well as to develop an understanding of cultural diversity within a multicultural society.
