The library is an integral part of Simon Balle School and is managed by a Chartered Librarian. The library holds approximately 12,000 books, an extensive newspaper cuttings file and a wide range of periodicals. There are sixteen network laptop computers. The library is building up its collection of CD-ROMs to ensure that students have access to as wide a range of information resources as possible. The demands of the A Level curriculum mean that all Year 12 students have formal induction lessons taken by the Librarian. This introduces students to relevant library resources and discusses information and study skills.

All departments are encouraged to promote the library resources to students. Certain departments, such as Business Education, have taken this one step further and are working with the Librarian to develop students’ research methods. Through the Hertfordshire Schools Library Service, the library has links with other libraries and agencies, and a full request and inter-library loan service is available to the school.

The importance of an effective and efficient information resource within the school can also be seen by the recent investment made to computerise the library, due to be completed in the next year.

The library is an important resource for the whole school and as Head of Department, the Librarian maintains an effective partnership with staff to ensure the library supports curriculum planning and responds effectively to new curriculum initiatives.
