Mathematics is an important part of the curriculum at Simon Balle School and we endeavour to encourage a positive attitude towards the subject, as well as developing pupils’ interest in mathematics in the world around us. Mathematics is taught by engaging pupils in a range of different types of tasks in the classroom, from quizzes to games, and extensive use is made of ICT to support learning. Good working habits are fostered: pupils are expected to pay high regard to the layout and tidiness of their work; and to appreciate the importance of showing working when answering a question.
At Key Stage 3 we establish the different styles of teaching and learning that we will use throughout their mathematical education at the school. At Key Stage 4 we follow the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics curriculum, with some taking the modular course and others taking the linear course.
At Key Stage 5 AS/A2 Level in Mathematics is very popular. Several pupils also take a second AS/A2 Level in Further Mathematics within the school.
