Dress Code

Sixth Formers at Simon Balle are expected to set a suitable example of smart appearance to their peers and other year groups. The dress code is essentially smart office wear and the requirements are as follows:

Girls
  • Blouse or top (without logos)
  • Suitable length skirt or trousers
  • Jacket optional but must be appropriate
    Smart shoes (not trainers)
Boys
  • Shirt with tie
  • Trousers and jacket or suit (navy, grey or black)
  • Smart shoes (not trainers)

Caps, Hooded tops, excessive piercing, and inappropriate hair styles are not acceptable and students breaching the dress code should expect to be sent home to change.

Electronics Policy

Electronic Items such as MP3 players and mobile phones are allowed on your person at school but are not to be used or seen during lessons. A teacher may request you hand over the device for the duration of the lesson if you do not comply. The School is not liable for the misplacement or any damage of your possessions.

    Resources room Policy

    • No eating or drinking, please.
    • The Resources room is an area for private study. Please show consideration for your peers.
Transport Policy

  • Parking is not allowed at Simon Balle unless a parking permit has been acquired.
  • Cycle racks are provided close to the sixth form for the storage of bicycles.
  • If you are using consortium transport, it is important that you arrive at the pick-up point for the taxi at the correct time.
  • If you are dropped off at school, we advise you are not dropped off directly in the school premises (unless circumstances demand it). The car park is often extremely busy.
Smoking Policy

Simon Balle School is a no-smoking site. Smoking on or near the school site is strictly prohibited.
Those who want to give up smoking should see a member of the sixth form staff, you may also want to visit the NHS smoke free site here (opens in new window).
Food and Drink

The Coffee shop beside the school canteen is available throughout most of the day for Sixth form students to purchase food or drink, which is very convenient. At lunch time, the canteen is also available.

Students can also leave the school premises during lunch to get food and drink or for other purposes.
Work Experience

Simon Balle School runs a work experience for yr12 students. We believe this gives students an idea of possible career opportunities and helps prompt ideas about what they are going to do after yr13.
The ‘launch’ of work experience is in January, and from January until March students should find a placement. Students are recommended to see Julie Calder if they have difficulty with this. The deadline for the work placement forms is March and the work experience runs in June, after exams. There will be assemblies with more information on this nearer the time.

EMA

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a cash allowance of £10, £20 or £30 for students whose household income is no more than £30,810. The money is only available if you attend school and make an effort. To be more precise, this is based on your standard of work, ability to meet deadlines and general organisation.

If you think you are eligible, or want more information, please see Mrs Stingemore. The EMA website is direct.go.uk/ema, but EMA must be administered through the school.
